Many persons can see well, even without glasses, and so the healthy vision is taken for granted. These persons, and others, may never have visited an optometrist. However, as the body ages the body needs more maintenance and this includes the eyes. What are some of the things that can be done to help keep that good vision as long as possible? Good diet does affect the vision. To help avoid macular degeneration and cataracts vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, and folic acid are helpful. Specific medications prescribed by the eye doctor may help to control glaucoma and cataracts.
Environmental hazards may harm the eyes such as airborne pollution and other chemicals. Late vision problems can also be helped with LASIK surgery. One can also be careful to prevent eye injuries at work. Safety measures such as protection from mechanical, chemical, or biological energy such as from welding hazards must followed. Contact lenses should not be worn where there is smoke, dust, or fumes. If the eye should be injured emergency medical services should be contacted immediately.
Sunglasses should be worn outside to protect the eyes from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. A hat with a broad brim also helps to protect the eyes. Appropriate eye protection should be worn when playing certain sports. This includes approved eye wear from the American Society for Testing and Materials. Importantly, eyes should be examined every two or three years by an eye doctor. Early detection and correction helps the person to maintain that good vision which has been taken for granted so many years.
