Lasik surgery for better eyesight, like all surgery, has pros and cons. Due diligence on your part will help you make the right choice when deciding to have the surgery, selecting a surgeon, and preparing. Good eyesight is valuable and needs to be guarded. There are some possible drawbacks to be aware of before making a final decision.
Dry eyes post surgery is one of the most common problems. During surgery, some cutting of corneal nerves that control tears is possible. Sometimes the nerves do not regenerate for normal tear production. The result is dry eyes, causing pain and burning.
Reduced or lost acuity is another common complication, which means contrasts in light processing may result. Night vision and bright sun may distort vision. Debilitating complications have resulted for some people. There are cases of the cornea not healing, which can cause dislodgement of corneal flaps permanently. Athletes often do not select Lasik due to this one possibility. Missed diagnoses of glaucoma are a possible risk after Lasik caused by skewed intraocular pressure.
Delayed complications noted are corneal interferences caused by biochemical imbalances due to the procedure, inflammation, or due to the flap created. The cornea is also at risk from bacterial access through the flap. Reduced close vision is possible and older patients may still need to use reading glasses.
When considering LASIK, be aware it is not a reversible procedure. Remedies for problems are limited and may warrant a corneal implant that also comes with no guarantees. Know the success rate of your surgeon and read the disclaimer you sign before succumbing to the laser.
