It’s a general fact that we take just about all parts of our bodies for granted unless there is something medically wrong or we do something like get a hang nail or stub our toe. That's probably a good thing most of the time or we could never enjoy life. However, preventative measures should always be taken into consideration with our precious bodies. We only get one unique model and hopefully all parts will work well for the duration of our lives.
The eyes are parts of our bodies that cannot be replaced. Only the brain is more complex than the eye. Eyes are on duty 24/7 at 100% optimum function and never need rest, even though actual eye lubrication does need replenishment. They process over 36,000 bits of information per hour. It is not unusual to be able to see a candle at a distance of 14 miles while in an aircraft or if other conditions exist in the correct combination. The eye works directly with the brain to translate light waves into vision. In addition, what the eyes see can mobilize hundreds of muscles and organs in the body to deal with decisions or immediate action.
The eyes can and do have ailments like any other part of the body. Some of these would include pink eye, cataracts, infections, torn retinas, far or near sightedness, and glaucoma. These need to be dealt with by an ophthalmologist. Some signs that there may be an eye problem would be flashes, sudden blurred vision, inner eye floaters, continued watering or burning, red eyes, double vision, or swelling of either eye without an apparent reason.
There may not be anything wrong with the eyes but they should still be checked for baseline measurements every 2-5 years unless there are medical health reasons like diabetes which would require more frequent visits. Eyes are more than just windows to the soul. They help us interpret our world.
