The Facts Of 20/20 Vision

Individuals who don’t require eyeglasses or contact lenses to see properly or to be able to read are been considered to have perfect vision. This may not be true, however, even for those individuals who have 20/20 vision.

According to one report, 20/20 vision is simply a term that is used to express normal visual clarity or sharpness of vision at a distance. Other vision skills include peripheral awareness, side vision, eye coordination and depth perception, the ability to focus and color vision. Whereas some people can see well from a distance, others need to be close to items in order to see. The ability to have good visual acuity is very important for performing everyday tasks in a place of work, especially when it involves reading words and interpreting symbols. Some examples of this are reading labels, gauges, inspecting products for flaws and scratches and foreign material. It is imperative to have 20/20 vision for visually guided manipulation as used in needle-threading, surgery and performing fine assembly tasks.

With the term of uncorrected vision, it refers to visual acuity when wearing no glasses or contact lenses. The term best corrected vision refers to the visual acuity when wearing the best glasses or contact lenses prescription for that particular person. Vision tests are performed on each eye individually, which are sometimes better when both eyes are tested together.

Normal vision is considered to include those individuals who have 20/30, 20/20 or 20/10 vision. The maximum visual acuity of the eye is usually at a reading of around 20/15 or 20/16, meaning that if an individual is claiming to be able to read the bottom line of an eye chart, they are probably simply a good guesser.
