Taking Care of Your Eyes

Most people don't think about taking care of their eyes; it's called eye health, and everyone should think about it. If you are lucky enough to have 20/20 vision, wouldn't you like to keep it? There's a lot you can do to care for your eyes and most of them are very simple things.

Getting regular eye exams is a start and can help you identify any problems before they become too serious. You should always wear protective sunglasses when out in the sun to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Your eyes need to be protected against cataracts and macular degenerations. These are common age related eye disorders. To prevent and protect your eyes from this kind of damage, you need to eat foods high in antioxidants and vitamins C and D. Foods that are rich in beta carotene, like spinach, carrots, and mangoes, are very beneficial to the eyes.

The eyes also need rest, just like the rest of your body. Some lifestyle choices, such as smoking, can reduce the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the retina. This will eventually cause cells in the retina and macula to die. This is macular degeneration. Getting plenty of exercise improves blood circulation, which helps the eyes receive enough oxygen. Contacts should not be worn more than 12 hours at a time. If you do wear contacts, make sure any eyedrops that you use can be used with contacts.

Visiting your eye doctor regularly is most important. Eat well and take good care of your eyes; you may need them.
