Vision screening is so important for us all, but especially for young children and teens. Problems with vision can be corrected if you can get the problem detected as early as possible. Nurses, doctors and eyecare professionals are specially trained to diagnose problems with your vision. Problems gone unnoticed or undetected can cause you to have to wear corrective eye glasses or contact lenses at an early age.
Early vision screens can prevent blurry vision and brain damage in young children. Amblyopia is a term used for someone who has a "lazy eye." Amblyopia causes the muscles in the eye to weaken and cause the eye to drift to the side. This problem can eventually disrupt the ability to see clearly. School and preschool screening programs are provided, usually at no cost, for your child's vision problems to be detected as early as possible. Some children, unfortunately, do not know how to tell you something is wrong with their vision because they think their vision is normal.
A child who has problems with their vision will end up starting school at a great disadvantage. They won't be able to see the work that the teacher puts on the chalkboard. They will end up getting frustrated and may display disinterest in school. This will cause them to receive bad grades and lower their self-esteem. They may feel like they are inferior among the other students and may want to quit going to school because they feel something is wrong with them.
