Non-Surgical Eye Treatments

Our sight is one of the most valuable of our five senses. If you are one of the many millions of people who wear contact lenses or glasses and are looking into ways to correct your vision but do not want to undergo invasive surgeries, here are a few non-surgical treatments available today. A new and very effective treatment is called vision therapy. Vision therapy can help with many common vision problems such as lazy eye, crossed eyes, and double vision to name a few. This program teaches you how to perform eye exercises under the supervision of a doctor in 30 to 60 minute visits twice a week.

Lasik is also another option many people choose to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. Lasik uses a laser to reshape the cornea of the eye. Usually this eliminates the need for corrective lenses. It usually only takes about an hour to do the procedure and you must be over 21 years of age and have good eye health.

Another option you may choose is Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, which is an alternative to Lasik. This procedure corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism also. Ortho-K is a treatment in which you wear vision retainers. These retainers are similar to hard contact lenses which gently reshape the cornea of your eye. The curvature of your cornea is measured and then the retainers are custom designed specifically for your eyes. Depending on the person it can take a few days or a few weeks. As always you should seek the advice of a professional optometrist and get a thorough eye examination before starting any of these programs or treatments.
