Eyes and Their Need for Eye Drops

The eyes are one of the most important senses of the human body. To keep them healthy, eye drops play a very important role. Statistics show that 80 percent of people that are blind realize it was preventable, and it involves approximately 36 million people.

The over the counter non-prescriptive eye drops are normally for dry eyes, or irritated eyes from wind or allergies. If these medications are not used in moderation, they could cause the same problem that its intended use was for.

Prescription eye drops are another subject. Among the leading causes of blindness, glaucoma is a prime candidate. It destroys the optic nerves in the eye and that is what causes blindness. Prescription eye drops reduce the pressure in the eye, thus preventing the start of glaucoma in 50 percent of users. This disease is more prevalent in the African American population, and is still the number one cause of blindness in the U.S.

Post operative eye drops play a significant role in the healing process after surgery. Eye drops help to control inflammation, and to prevent infection. The eye drops relieve discomfort and prevent potential complications.

Though the benefits speak for themselves, eye drops cannot do their job without the user doing their job. The biggest complaint among users is that they cannot hit their eye with the eye drops. Others are difficulty holding the tiny bottle, or just plain forgetting to take them.

The importance of using eye drops is sometimes not realized until it is too late.
