Eye Drops

Eye drops are medicated solutions for the eyes applied in drops. Eye drops contain medicine used to treat many eye diseases and conditions. There are eye drops for different purposes. There are also eye drops that need a prescription from the doctor and non-prescription eye drops.

There are many things that affect the eyes, including red, itchy, watery eyes that may be due to allergies and can be treated with eye drops. Excessive discharge from the eye, red, swollen eyelids, scratchy or sandy feeling eyes and discharge that may cause the eyelids to stick together during sleep are also considered for eye drop use. This may be due to an inflammation of the membrane lining of the inside of eyelid or surface of the eye. Eye drops can be effective in relieving symptoms.

Antibiotic prescription eye drops used for bacterial infections of the eye are also common. Over-the-counter eye drops can provide short-term relief for allergy symptoms. Prescription eye drops provide both short-term and long-term relief.

Eye drops are effective when used properly. It is important to ensure the medication be used correctly. Those who use eye drops should follow these steps. First wash your hands, and then dry them with a clean towel. For older children or adults, pull lower eye lid down with two fingers to create a little pouch. Put the drops here. Close the eye for several minutes to let drops coat the eye. For younger children, ask the child to lie down with eyes closed. Put a drop in inner corner of the eye. When the child opens the eye, the drop will run in. If more than one drop is required, wait five minutes between drops.
