Lasik Eye Surgery and Its Complications

For many, Lasik eye surgery is the only solution to their eye problems. The surgery is often a success, but there are times where it can turn into a nightmare. There are several complications for some patients following this type of surgery.

The most common side effect from the surgery is dry eye. There are several alternative solutions to this problem, such as artificial tears drops, Flax seed oils or a humidifier. Postmenopausal women and patients with arthritis or thyroid problems tend to be at a higher risk of developing dry eyes. The second problem is the over-correction or under-correction of the eye. Even though the patients have expectations to have perfect vision after the procedure, the chances are a second procedure is needed to get the best results.

Another common problem is an irregular cornea, which is caused by irregular healing after surgery. The consequences are poor night vision, halos, ghosts, and glares. This can cause the patient to be unable to drive at night, have constant eyestrain, and frequent headaches. For some, contact lenses are harder to fit in after the Lasik surgery, since it alters the shape of the cornea. In rare cases, decreased or lost vision may occur. Glasses or contact lenses might not be useful in this situation. Infection, scarring, flap complications and equipment malfunction can all contribute to this cornea scenario.

Since 1998, the long term effects and safety of the surgery is still mainly unknown. It is important to consult with your doctor and think critically before following with this procedure. Being well-informed can be helpful in avoiding any complications following Lasik eye surgery.
