General Information About 20/20 Vision

20/20 vision does not mean that you have perfect vision but, rather, that you have average vision. This means that at 20 feet away you can see what most people can see at 20 feet away. If you have 20/10 vision then you have excellent sight and can see at 20 feet away what most can see when standing at 10 feet away. If you have 20/80 vision, then you have pretty bad vision. You can see at 20 feet away what most can see at 80 feet away. This can be caused by near or farsightedness, and can be treated by a doctor of optometry.

The United States has designed specific cutoffs for certain tasks. 20/20 is commonly used for the cutoff to be eligible to receive a pilot’s license and 20/40 for a driver’s license. 20/80 may be used to qualify a person for special educational assistance and 20/200 pronounces a person legally blind, and can be used for tax benefits in the U.S.

Everyday life is full of visual exhilaration. At almost any given moment your optic nerves are taking in loads of data and each piece of it is necessary, especially in the workplace. There are many tasks that require good eyesight, for example: reading labels, gauges, and dials or inspecting products for cracks, scratches, and foreign material. Having good vision is essential when driving. People use their visual recognition for spotting environmental landmarks, avoiding small obstacles and reading highway signs while driving. Without good vision these everyday tasks could be very dangerous.
