Lasik Eye Surgery

We use the term "lasik" most commonly when referring to "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis." Performed by ophthalmologists, it is is a refractive laser eye surgery performed for correcting ones vision.

By reshaping the cornea, the focusing power of the eye is changed and many people will no longer need to wear corrective lenses. Many people totally eliminate the need for contact or eye glasses by obtaining 20/20 vision through this procedure.

Lasik eye surgery is used to correct astigmatisim, nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia). It is important to have a full evaluation done prior to any surgery. Your eye doctor will need a complete detail medical history from you.

Your doctor will also need to determine the shape and condition of your corneas. An uneven surface or abnormal shaped cornea could cause problems. Contact lenses should not be worn for several weeks prior to this exam. Inaccurate measurements can be obtained since contact lenses can distort the shape of your cornea. This could lead to a poor outcome after the surgery or even a recommendation against the surgery.

It's important to keep your eyes and eyelashes very clean prior to the surgery in order to avoid infection. This is done as outpatient surgery so you will need to have someone drive you home after the procedure. Keep in mind that the cost of this surgery is usually not covered my medical insurance. In most cases it is elective surgery and not necessary for the health of your eye.
